Hot or Not!? L.A. Girl Matte Liquid Lipsticks

I have been using these L.A. Girl matte liquid lipsticks for a while now and thought I would go ahead and post a product review all about them! I am not a huge liquid lipstick fanatic (I prefer regular lipstick), but these are so inexpensive and the colors are so pretty!

img_8469

I have three shades (bottom to top): Dreamy (pink toned nude), Backstage (deep berry), and Fleur (terracotta toned).

General info about the product:

  • They retail for $4 each (can be found for cheaper depending on what store you purchase them at).
  • Each tube has .17 oz. of product.
  • They have a standard doe-foot applicator.
  • They dry down to a completely matte finish
  • Comes in 16 shades

img_8471

Left to right: Fleur, Dreamy, Backstage

I will start off by saying that for the $4 price tag, these liquid lipsticks are pretty awesome and worth it (in my opinion), but I would not spend $20 on them.

They are very pigmented and I did not have any issues with streakiness with the two lighter shades (Dreamy and Fleur). Darkside on the other hand, applies very streaky and I definitely have to wear a lipliner underneath because it is nearly impossible to get it to look right (the color is beautiful though so I work with it, but it is kind of annoying).

The applicator is a flat doe-foot applicator, which is typical with liquid lipsticks. The applicator makes it really easy to apply the product and is pretty much fool-proof. So far, this product hits all the checks for me- pigmented and easy to apply, but the main reason why I typically do not go for liquid lipsticks is because they make my lips feel really dry. I was afraid that with these being so inexpensive, the formula would be really drying and chalky, but that was not the case. It is not the most moisturizing formula (this is hard for matte lipsticks in general), but it is comfortable and does not accentuate the lines in my lips too badly.

Something else about this product that I like is the wear time. Let me tell you, THESE WILL STAY PUT FOR DAYS. Once they dry, they dry completely and will not transfer. I have worn these for 8 hours straight during work and they look exactly the same as when I first apply them. I like this, because I do not have to reapply throughout the day, but you will need some kind of oil or heavy duty makeup remover to get them off. Once you get them off though, they won’t stain your lips (at least they don’t for me).

So again, would I spend $20 a piece on these- no. But for $4 each, I would definitely go back and purchase more shades because the wear time amazing and overall, it is a really great product!

Hidden Gem At the Drugstore!

This is the Elf “Powder Brush” and I do not know where this brush has been all my life. I picked this up at Target for only $2 and it has become a brush that I have been using almost everyday. I am not sure why it is called a powder brush because it is not big enough to be an all over face powder brush. So, I do not necessarily use this for setting my face, but it has become my favorite brush for just about everything else.

This $2 brush is great for powder contouring, cream contouring, setting the under eye area, highlighting, touching up with powder, and probably a ton of other things. The brush hairs are dense enough to blend out contour beautifully, yet soft enough to apply highlighter to the cheekbones without it looking streaky. This is also a great dupe for an already inexpensive brush, the Morphe m530.

elf powder brush

I feel like the white brushes from Elf are not as popular just because the quality is not always as good as their studio line of brushes, but this one is a must-have in my opinion!

5 Different Ways To Use Vaseline In Your Beauty Routine

Vaseline 100% petroleum jelly is a very common inexpensive household product that can be used in a variety of different ways. In this post, I am going to list 5 unique ways to incorporate this miracle product in your daily beauty routine that you may, or may not, have heard of before! vaseline

  1. Lip mask- Vaseline is extremely moisturizing and thick enough to be used as a lip mask. Apply a generous amount to your lips before you go to sleep and leave it on overnight. You will wake up with lips that are extremely soft, smooth, and moisturized! You could also mix a little bit of granulated sugar in with some Vaseline and use this as a simple and effective lip scrub.
  2. Clear brow gel- Sometimes when I just want to tame my brow hairs before running out the door, I will just scoop up a little bit of Vaseline with my fingers and swipe it through my brows to keep them in place. Vaseline is also said to help grow out your brow hairs, so this is like a two-in-one.
  3. Clear mascara- Again, when I am in a hurry and do not feel like putting on mascara, I will run some Vaseline through my lashes with my finger. The Vaseline gives your lashes a wet look, so it will make them look darker and thicker. Vaseline is also really hydrating for your lashes and over time, will make them appear thicker and longer naturally.
  4. Under eye moisturizer- Before you go to sleep, after you have gone through your normal night time skincare routine, you can apply just a little bit of Vaseline to the under eye area for extra hydration. Over time, the moisturizing properties of petroleum jelly will really help with fine lines and aging. This will also not cause breakouts.
  5. Base for powder highlighter- I love this trick! Before you go in with your favorite powder highlight, dab a very small amount of Vaseline on your cheekbones and then go overtop with the highlighter. This acts as a clear balm and will really intensify the highlight.

Hopefully y’all learned something new! Vaseline is something that everyone already has and the number of ways it can be used it never ending!

Makeup Guide: Must Have Brushes (Drugstore)

My two favorite makeup brush brands from the drugstore are from Elf and Real Techniques. In my opinion, these are some of the best brushes on the market in general, not just at the drugstore. While I love all the brushes from both brands, these are the staples that I think every makeup lover should have in their collection!

Elf

I love Elf brushes! They are extremely good quality yet very affordable. I personally use their face brushes more often than the eye brushes but they are all amazing!

Ultimate Blending Brush ($6)

I use this brush to apply foundation every time I do my makeup. It has replaced my Sigma F80 Flat Top Kabuki as my go- to foundation brush.

elf 1

Stipple Brush ($4) and the Small Stipple Brush ($3)

I love to use the larger stipple brush to apply my blush. This might sound odd but it gives a beautiful and even application every time! It is also great for bronzer. The small stipple brush is hands down the best brush to blend out cream products (contour and blush). Using this brush makes it so easy and quick. The small stipple is also a dupe for the MAC 130.

Small Tapered Brush ($3)

I love using this brush to set my under eye area or dust off any baking. To be honest I am not sure what the actual purpose is of this brush, but I use it everyday and it is awesome to set areas of the face with powder.

elf 3

Blending Brush ($6)

I love using this brush for contouring. It is fluffy enough to blend out the product and make the contour look “natural”, but flat enough to really fit into the hallow under the cheekbone.

elf 4

Eyelash and Brow Spoolie ($1)

This is just your typical spoolie brush, but for a buck it is perfect for combing out the brow hairs before and after applying product. I use this everyday and even though it just seems so simple and unnecessary, I cannot go a day without using this one!

elf 6

Real Techniques

Real Techniques is my absolute favorite brand of drugstore brushes (Tip: Ulta usually has them on sale for buy one get one half off!). The quality of these brushes is just out of this world and they are so inexpensive! I use their face and eye brushes over some of my more expensive brushes every day! It is really hard for me to narrow down my absolute favorites but here are the ones I use on a daily basis!

Miracle Complexion Sponge ($6)

This is my favorite makeup sponge on the market! All I can say is that using this sponge has made me regret spending the $20 on the original Beauty Blender. rt 1

Blush Brush ($9)

This is the best brush (for any price range) for applying blush. It just allows for an easy and even application. It is also great for bronzing up the face.

rt 4

Powder Brush ($10)

I love this brush for setting my makeup with powder or for applying bronzer as well. If I am in a hurry, I just use this to brush on some translucent powder and bronzer and I am good to go! I just love how big and luxurious this brush feels as well.

rt 5

Retractible Stipple Brush ($10)

I love this brush so much I can’t stand it! It is travel friendly which is always a plus and the brush hairs are the perfect density. That sounds strange, but when you use this brush you will understand what I am talking about. I love using this to apply bronzer and even foundation. It does not leave a streaky finish (due to the perfect density of the bristles) and I am just obsessed with it. If I had to pick one brush from Real Techniques, it would be this one.

rt 2

Setting Brush ( $8)

I love using this brush for setting the under eye area and dusting off any baking. It is also great for getting a really precise contour and really carve out those cheekbones. If I am in a hurry, I also like using this brush to use whatever bronzer I have out to pop in my crease if I am in a rush and going for a more natural look.

rt 3

Starter Set ($11-18)

The price on this set has a larger range because on the actual Real Techniques site is is $18, but I got mine on drugstore.com for $12. I love this brush set so much and there is not one brush from the set that I do not use. The first brush is great for applying a cream base and blending that out, the second brush is a awesome crease brush, the third is the perfect size for smoking out the bottom lash line, the fourth I like to use if I want to apply a dark eyeshadow as a liner, and the last brush I use to fill in my brows or on the bottom lash line as well.

rt 6

I really hope this was helpful to some of y’all looking for great drugstore brush options! I know Elf and Real Techniques are already extremely well known brands but I just wanted to share my favorites!

Best Of: Wet N Wild Cosmetics

I have mentioned Wet N Wild products so many times in my blog posts, but for such an inexpensive brands, a lot of their products are so amazing! I have not tried every product from the line, but here are my favorite products from Wet N Wild that I have tried and use religiously.

*All prices listed come from the Wet N Wild website*

MegaLast Lip Color ($1.99)

wet 1

These lipsticks are a common favorite from the brand, but they really are fantastic. The formula is a little dry at first, but if you warm it up a little on the back of your hand you will get an even application that is opaque and budge- proof all day long.

MegaLast Nail Color/ Polish ($1.99)

wet 2

These are some of my favorite polishes from the drugstore! The brush on these polishes is amazing and allows for a flawless application. The colors are also gorgeous! I like some of these polishes better than ones from OPI!

ColorIcon Blushes ($2.99)

wet 3

These blushes are also a common favorite. All of the shades are beautiful and they apply evenly and are not patchy at all! They have matte and shimmer shades for a blush/ highlighted look.

PhotoFocus Setting Spray ($4.99)

wet 5

I only like two setting sprays from the drugstore and this is one of them! I find that it sets and prolongs the wear of my makeup really well. The only downside is that the spray is not as fine as I would like, but that has never ruined my makeup and it still does the job.

Reserve Your Cabana “Bronzer” ($3.99)

wet 4

I already have a full post dedicated to this gem so I won’t go too much into detail. If you don’t have this product in your makeup collection, I seriously recommend going and picking it up. It is a gorgeous subtle highlight for any skin tone!

MegaGlo Contouring Palettes ($4.99)

I have also talked about these two on my blog as well but they are SO GOOD! You get a ton of product and the formula is a powder, but the consistency is so smooth and soft it almost feels like a cream. These blend beautifully and have great pigmentation. If you are looking for a drugstore contour kit option, definitely pick these up.

MegaGlo Illuminating Palette ($4.99)

wet 7

This highlight palette is so pretty! It is more intense than the Reserve Your Cabana one I talked about above if you want something with a little more glow power. Again, you get a good amount of product and the strips are big enough to just pick up one shade, or combine all four shades for a beautiful highlight.

Pink and White Brushes ($0.99-$2.99)

wet 8

All of these brushes are FANTASTIC! I am obsessed with them and use them everyday. They are so incredibly soft and for the price you would pay for one MAC brush, you could get every brush from this collection! I cannot say enough about these, they are just great, great brushes for any price range.

These next two products I could not find on the Wet N Wild website, but I have seen them in the drugstore.

PhotoFocus Eyeshadow Primer ($4.99)- This eye primer is amazing and it works the same, if not better, than the Urban Decay one!

ColorIcon Ombre Blushes ($4.99)- These are shimmery blushes but are so pretty! You can use them as a blush, blush topper, or as a highlight depending on which part of the ombre you pick up with your blush! They blend and apply just as well as the original ColorIcon blushes and are just so good.

Hidden Gem At the Drugstore!: Essence Lash Princess

Essence is another inexpensive brand (found on the drugstore side of Ulta) that can be hit or miss but I have found THE BEST mascara from this brand for less than $5!

Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect mascara ($4.99)

lash princess

First of all, the packaging is absolutely adorable, but it is the wand and product inside that creates the magic. This mascara claims to give a false lash effect and it definitely does!

**I apologize in advance for my ratchet- looking eyebrows lol!**

My lashes uncurled with no product.

IMG_6506

My lashes curled with no product.

IMG_6507

One coat of product.

IMG_6508

Two coats of product.

IMG_6512

Hands down, this mascara has quickly become my favorite drugstore mascara! It knocks my previous go- to lengthening mascara (Covergirl Super Sizer) out of the water. I will say, it is not the best for adding volume and if you apply too much it can look a little clumpy. I recommend giving your lashes one good coat with the Lash Princess, letting it dry, and then going in with your favorite volumizing mascara and focusing that at the base of your lashes. This seems a little high maintenance but I swear you will have a great lash day every time!

Definitely go out and pick up this mascara, I have quickly become obsessed!

Best Of: Milani Cosmetics

Milani is a drugstore brand that can be a hit or miss in terms of the quality of their products. Here are the products from Milani that I have tried and fallen in love with!

Milani Matte Color Statement lipsticks ($5)

milani 7

These are so creamy and pigmented! They apply very evenly and have a wide variety of shades.

Milani Color Statement lipliner ($4)

milani 5

I love these lipliners! My favorite shade is All Natural. It lasts all day and the formula is not as drying as the MAC lipliners.

Milani Baked Bronzer in Bronze ($8)

milani 1

These baked bronzers are amazing! They are one of my favorite products the drugstore has to offer in terms of cosmetics! I like the shade Bronze, but it is on the warm/ orange-y side so if you are more fair I do not recommend this shade in particular, but they do have more shades that suit different skin tones. It does have shimmer (baked products typically do) but it is not over the top by any means. It gives the most beautiful sun- kissed glow and is perfect for summer!

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso ($6)

milani 2

This is a cult favorite beauty product from Milani, but it really does live up to all the praise. This blush so so beautiful and can be a blush and highlight in one! This blush is so pretty if you do not already have it, YOU NEED IT!

Milani Rose Blush in Tea Rose ($8)

milani 3

I feel like these rose blushes are not as popular as they should be. Aside from the beautiful packaging, these blushes, especially the shade Tea Rose, are gorgeous! They give just the right amount of pigment, so you won’t pick up too much product, and they blend out so well. This shade in particular I think will look great on any skin tone if you are looking for the perfect touch of pink to brighten up your  cheeks!

Milani Bella Eyes shadows ($4)

milani 8

I have already mentioned these shadows in a previous blog post so I won’t go into too much detail but they are just beautiful shadows. There are also a wide variety of shades and they are very pigmented.

Milani Brow Shaping Gel ($4)

milani 4

I have also mentioned this product on my blog before but it is my all time favorite brow gel! I use this stuff every single day and is a great dupe for the Anastasia Beverly Hills brow gel for a fraction of the price!

Milani Conceal + Perfect foundation ($10)

milani 6

I love this foundation! It is a full coverage foundation and gives a beautiful demi- matte finish to the skin. I have heard that people with oilier skin do not like this foundation, but I have oily skin and it works for me!

I hope y’all enjoyed this post! I definitely recommend trying these products out if you haven’t already!

Makeup Guide: Drugstore Foundations

I am a big fan of finding great foundations at the drugstore! I have purchased a few higher end foundations before, however sometimes the ones that are less expensive perform just as well if not better.

Here are some foundations that I love from the drugstore that work for combo to oily skin, dryer skin, and also some that are perfect for any skin type! These are also great to use at any time of the year!

Combo- Oily Skin Types

L’Oreal Infallible Pro- Matte liquid foundation ($10-12)

found 4

I have already talked about this product on my blog before but it is a great foundation for oilier skin types. It is so good I almost can’t believe it is drugstore! This foundation does a great job of controlling oil and staying in place all day.

Maybelline Fit Me! Matte + Poreless liquid foundation ($6-7)

found 5

I have mentioned this one a couple of times as well but again, it is a great foundation for more combination skin.  This one also controls oil really well, but gives more of a natural “dewey” (but not a shiny type of “dewey”) finish to the skin.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Fluid- Touch liquid foundation ($7-8)

found 6

I do not think I have ever talked about this foundation on my blog before but it is really great! It is more of a liquid- powder formula but I really like to mix some of this in with another foundation to reap the benefits of both! This has a beautiful finish and is great for combo- oily skin!

Dry Skin Types

L’Oreal True Match Lumi liquid foundation ($11)

found 2

This foundation is a fantastic drugstore foundation for dry skin types (I would definitely not pick this one up if you are oily). It gives a gorgeous finish and does not accentuate dryness at all!

L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion foundation ($13-15)

found 3

Cushion foundations are kind of trending now, but this one is a great drugstore option! This foundation is really meant for dryer skin, BUT if you are on the oily side and want to test a more luminous foundation, I would definitely go for this one over the original L’Oreal True Match Lumi. The only downside in these cushion foundations is that you do not get as much product, but a little goes a long way and it gives a beautiful “lit from within” glow!

All Skin Types

L’Oreal True Match liquid foundation ($7-8)

found 1

This is hands down one of the best liquid foundations the drugstore has to offer. The OG L’Oreal True Match is the perfect foundation for any skin type and the range of color options and shades is out of this world! If you are starting off as a makeup artist, this is a great foundation to keep in your kit because there is such a large shade range, it is inexpensive, and works with any skin type. This was one of the first foundations I ever purchased when I started using makeup and is still one of my favorites today!

Overall, L’Oreal kind of dominated this Makeup Guide post, but they really do a great job with foundations! I hope this was helpful and guides you in the right direction the next time you go on the hunt for an inexpensive foundation that suits your skin type!

How To: “Kylie Jenner” Lip Color

Yes, I know this is something that is over-talked about and has been a trend for over a year now, but I have FINALLY found the perfect “Kylie Jenner Lip” from the drugstore!

I am going to give you a more expensive MAC option (for all you MAC fanatics out there who probably already have these) and I am also going to give a drugstore option which is way less expensive but still gives the same effect.

First, the liners:

Lining your lips (or over- lining your lips if that is something you’re into) is key to achieving the infamous “Kylie Lip”. For more staying power, line and fill in your lips completely with a liner before going in with a lipstick.

IMG_6445

Left to Right: MAC Spice ($17), Jordana Rock N’ Rose ($2), Milani All Natural ($4)

IMG_6440

As you can see by the swatches, these liners are all basically the same. The only difference is that the MAC one has more of a red tone to it, but you will still get the same result with any of these liners. Also, the Jordana and Milani liners are more creamy than the MAC formula, but I find that they last just as long!

Next, the lipsticks:

My favorite MAC lipstick of all time is Velvet Teddy and this is the shade I use to get the “Kylie Lip” look. I have found a great drugstore dupe though that I like just as much!

IMG_6446

Left to Right: MAC matte lipstick in Velvet Teddy ($17), Maybelline matte lipstick in Nude Nuance ($5-6)

IMG_6444

The Maybelline lipstick option is deeper than the MAC lipstick but it still gives the same look. I almost prefer the Maybelline lipstick because it is a much creamier formula than the MAC one! The only downside is that it does not have the same staying power, but I personally do not mind having to reapply throughout the day because it is more moisturizing. I also added a NYX Butter Gloss on the side in the shade Madeleine if you want a glossier finish!

I hope this helped anyone who is still on the hunt for drugstore (or MAC) options to get that infamous lip color! I still love the dusty rose tones and feel that it looks great on any skin tone!

Makeup Guide: Best Drugstore Single Eyeshadows

Sometimes it can be hard to find a great quality eyeshadow at the drugstore, but these are my top three favorites that are inexpensive, yet perform like high end shadows.

** The swatches are just the eyeshadow- no primer and no setting spray!**

L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadows ($7-8)

loreal infallible

IMG_6425

These are swatches of a few of the shades I own. My favorite shade is Amber Rush (middle shade). This is the shadow that everyone raves about because it is just that amazing. Whenever I use this shadow I almost can’t believe that it is drugstore! These shadows are extremely pigmented and so soft and buttery they almost feel like cream shadows, but they are a pressed powder. Love these!!

Maybelline Color Tattoos ($6-7)

color tat

IMG_6428

Again, just some swatches of two of my most used shades from the Color Tattoo range. These are cream shadows and I love using them as a base for my other shadows. They enhance the pigment and stay on all day without creasing. I like to use the matte Creamy Beige shade as an eyeshadow base and it works just as well as a MAC Paint Pot. Both the shimmery and matte shades from the “Leathers” line are amazing!

Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadows ($4-5)

milani bella

IMG_6429

And lastly, these Milani shadows are to die for! I will be honest though, not all shades from the line are created equally, but these three are my favorite shades (Bella Emerald, Bella Espresso, Bella Champagne). These are very pigmented and do feel very smooth and creamy. They also blend very well. I do prefer to use these over a base or with setting spray on my brush, but they are outstanding on their own as well.
