Product Review: Mario Badescu Whitening Mask

I love trying out different skincare products, but I am really picky about masks specifically. The only mask that I have tried that actually makes a difference in my skin is the Aztec Secreat Healing clay mask. I saw that this mask had really good reviews and I just love Mario Badescu products in general because they are not too expensive and I haven’t been disappointed by their performance yet…. and this mask is no exception!

Product discriptions and claims:

  • 2 oz. (56 g) of product per jar for $24
  • Suited for ALL skin types
  • Supposed to give a brighter complexion with Kojoc Acid and licorice, mulberry, and grapeseed extracts.
  • Designed to help reduce the appearance of dark spots.
  • Contains beeswax to help seal vitamins and nutrients into your skin.
  • The consistency is very thick and a little bit goes a long way so this jar will last a while. It also smells amazing!

When I read all this info on the jar I was like YES YES YES YES! But of course, you never know if a product works until you try it out.

I have used this mask four times since I bought it and I have actually noticed results! This mask has definitely evened out my skin tone AND drastically faded my acne scars. They are not completely gone, but I feel so much more confident leaving my house without makeup or even concealer to hide them.

The directions say to apply a thin layer of the mask to clean skin, wait 5-10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. Use 2-3 times a week.

The mask is really gentle and doesn’t sting or burn like the Aztec mask, but this is also not meant for reducing blemished and cleaning out your pores. It does dry down quickly and makes your skin feel firm, but it is not uncomfortable at all. Even though it says to use 2-3 times a week, I have been using this every night since I got it after I cleanse my skin. It doesn’t dry out my skin or irritate it, so I just use it every night for faster results (plus it just feels really good).

Bottom line: If you struggle with acne scars, dark spots, uneven complexion etc., I really think you should try out this mask! I have noticed a big difference and this is definitely something I will continue to repurchase!

DIY: Acne Spot Treatment

This DIY is going to be short, sweet, and extremely easy and affordable! I have tried quite a few store-bought spot treatments and the only one that has really worked for me is the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. The only thing is that this little bottle costs $17. Yes, you do get a lot of product and it will last a while, but I still wanted to play around with some of the natural products I had at home.

I apply two things to my skin everyday: Pure 100% aloe vera gel and tea tree oil. Both of these products are great for acne spots and acne-prone skin types. Both of these have anti-inflammatory properties and tea tree oil especially is known for its acne fighting capabilities. Because of this, I decided to mix the two together to create my own spot treatment.

The steps to this DIY are very simple. All you need to do is mix about a teaspoon of aloe gel and about 5 drops of tea tree oil. You could measure this however you want to, but this is just what I like to go by. I keep this mixture in a little jar and use it on pimples whenever they come up. I notice that overnight the redness has reduced and the pimple decreases in size or sometimes even goes away completely if I take care of it early enough.

I apply the mixture onto the blemish morning and night after my skincare routine with a Q-Tip and pat it in a little with my finger. Then, I use a daily moisturizer overtop.

I hope this post was helpful and you learned something new!

Natural Summer Makeup Look

I have been posting a lot of makeup looks recently, but I have been feeling really inspired! This is a quick and easy natural makeup look that I did on my best friend Caroline. As much as I love doing my own makeup, I kind of like to do other people’s more because I get to play around with different eye colors, bone structure, and skin tones.

IMG_6811

Since I wanted this to be a natural makeup look, I did not use any eyeliner or do any extreme contouring. Instead, I used a grey/brown eyeshadow to enhance the upper lash line and focused on bronzing up the skin rather than contouring her face. Also, instead of using foundation, I used a CC Cream for a more natural finish.

This makeup was really easy to do and is perfect for the summer!

SWEAT-PROOF Concert Makeup

Going to an outdoor concert in the middle of the summer is equivalent to sitting on the surface of the sun, especially in Texas. I always get excited to do my makeup for concerts, but I struggle because I already have oily skin and the heat on top of that just makes it even worse.

BUT, I have figured out which products hold up against sweat and heat rather than just melting off of my face. These products stayed in place the WHOLE NIGHT and when I got home after the concert, my makeup still looked perfect and not shiny at all! I am not going to list every product that I used, just the ones that are typically the first to go. I will say, I did use a few different base/ priming products to really ensure that my makeup would last all night and stand up against the heat and sweat. It might seem like a lot, but it worked extremely well and did not feel heavy and thick on the skin at all.

IMG_6842

  • First, I applied the Murad Oil Control Mattifier SPF 15 all over my face and neck. I rubbed it in a little, then focused on really pressing this into my skin. Side note: it is extremely important to wear an SPF, especially if you are going to be out in the sun.
  • Then I sprayed my face with my DIY Primer Water (I have a whole post and ingredient list for this DIY in a previous post- check it out!). This stuff works extremely well, I definitely recommend making your own!
  • Next, I applied the Nivea Mens Post Shave Balm all over my face.
  • Then, last for the primers, I applied the Makeup Forever Step 1 mattifying primer to the areas of my face that I get really oily. This stuff is key to achieving this sweat-proof makeup. I cannot say enough good things about it! If you’re oily- buy this stuff, you need it in your life. When using it though, you want to make sure to only apply it to oily areas because it is pretty intense.
  • For foundation, I used my L’Oreal Infallible Pro- Matte liquid foundation and set it with the Pro- Matte powder. This combo is sweat-proof and feels lightweight on the skin while being full coverage.
  • The last product that is great for hot, sweaty days is the MAC Pro Longwear concealer. I used this under my eyes and as my eyeshadow primer. IT WILL NOT CREASE. The consistency is on the thicker side, but it will not budge and sets nicely.

These are all the products I used for my summer concert makeup! I cannot stress enough how well this combo worked for me, but if I could recommend one product that really made a difference, it would be the Makeup Forever primer. It is the best mattifying primer I have ever used and I was amazed by how well it held up. Hope this was helpful!

4th of July Eye Look + 2 Lip Options

I decided to do something bold for The 4th this year, so I came up with this shimmery, navy blue halo eye look. I also chose two lip colors that I think would go really well with this eye makeup.

IMG_6797

IMG_6798

The lip colors kind of change the way the eyeshadow looks, which I thought was really cool! The bright red accentuates the lighter blue shadow in the center of the lid while the navy blue lip color emphasizes the grey, cooler tones in the shadow.

Products I used:

Eyes

  • NYX eyeshadow in “Galactic”- inner and outer corner of the lid
  • Makeup Geek eyeshadow in “Bitten”- crease/ transition shade & bottom lash line
  • I used a shimmery baby blue shadow from an old Sephora eyeshadow palette on the center of the lid and inner corner.
  • Used Maybelline black gel liner to create a wing. I did not want the eyeliner to be too dramatic because I did not want it to take away from the eyeshadow.
  • Applied Maybelline The Falsies mascara to my top and bottom lashes.

Lips

  • For the red lip option, I lined my lips using the Elf Matte Lip Color pencil in shade Riach Red and filled in my lips using Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in shade Standout
  • For the navy blue lip option, I just used Maybelline lipstick in Midnight Blue from their new Bolds lipstick line. For a little extra dimension, I dabbed a little bit of MAC Nylon eyeshadow in the center of my lips.

I hope y’all enjoyed this look and have a safe 4th of July!!

Makeup Guide: The Best Primers For Oily Skin

These are my favorite primers to use that I know will keep my makeup on all day while also keeping the oil and shine to a minimum. A couple of these options are unconventional products that are not advertised as makeup primers, but they still work great!

Vegetable Glycerin

primer

Glycerin is the key ingredient in any makeup primer, so having it in its purest form is the best way to prime your face for makeup. I mix a couple of drops in with my daily moisturizer and apply that to my skin before applying my makeup. It will get extremely tacky, which is a good thing because then you know your makeup will really stick to your skin. Glycerin is great for oily skin in general because it really controls oils while moisturizing the skin at the same time (without causing greasiness or extra shine). I got this Now Solutions 100% Vegetable Glycerin on Amazon for about $6.

Nivea Men Post Shave Balm

primer 1

Y’all are probably sick of hearing about this stuff but it really is a great primer for oily skin because again, glycerin is one of the main ingredients. It will moisturize the skin as well and lock makeup into place.

Monistat Chafing Relief Gel

primer 2

I have also talked about this odd priming product in a previous blog post, but again, it is a near perfect dupe for the Smashbox Photo Finish primer. It has all the same ingredients and is way cheaper! It might seem a little strange to put chafing gel on your face, but it works like a charm and wont break you out (unless the Smashbox primer does). It has that typical silicone gel texture that glides over skin and smooths out any large pores.

Makeup Forever Step 1 Matte Primer

primer 5

THIS STUFF WILL KEEP YOU MATTE ALL DAY! I feel that no matter how oily your skin is, this will be your best friend. It works so well that you almost need to be careful using it and only use it on the places that you get oily. If you apply this onto dryer areas, it might ball up under your foundation, so I recommend focusing this mainly on your T-Zone. This primer stands up against oily skin the best, in my opinion.

**Sephora hint: If you purchase two of the 0.5 oz tubes for $17 each instead of just buying one 1.0 oz  tube for $38, it ends up being a few dollars cheaper and they are more travel friendly! **

100% Aloe Vera Gel

primer 3

I have mentioned this product as a great primer in a previous post as well. Ale Vera gel is a great primer because makeup sticks to it very well and it will glide over skin, filling in any large pores. Aloe also has anti-inflammatory properties, so this is great for irritated skin that is prone to acne and inflammation. Just make sure that you are purchasing no color added, 100% aloe gel.

Murad Oil Control Mattifier

primer 4

Last but not least, this Murad product works as a great primer for oily skin! It is not marketed as a primer, but it basically is. It is a thicker consistency and feels more like a moisturizer/ sunscreen (it does have SPF 15), but it is tacky and does a great job of controlling oily skin. I love this stuff and I do not think  I can live without it!

** Another oily skin tip- remember to always wear a facial sunscreen under your primer and makeup or on no makeup days! This is extremely important and will also help with oily skin. **

I hope this post was helpful! All of these products can be used under makeup or on those no makeup days when you still want to keep your oily skin under control.

Glam Grunge- Makeup Look

I have been wanting to do a look like this for a while since black lipstick is still pretty trendy- so here it is! I did a dark, smokey eye and paired it with a matte black lipstick for a grunge-y glam look. This might be a little too dark for summer, but it is a fun look for music festivals, concerts, or if you are just feeling a little bold.

Keep reading to see the products I used to achieve this look!

Eyes

My goal for the eye look was to create something very deep and smokey with shimmery purple tones. Because this is a “grungey” type of look, I did not want to create a wing or cat eye effect. I focused on blending the shadows out really well and not winging them out in the process (which is usually a habit of mine).

  • Applied Darkside eyeshadow from the UD Naked 3 palette all over the lid
  • Applied Swiss Chocolate, Soft Brown, and Corduroy from MAC in the crease to blend out the Darkside shade.
  • Applied Blackout eyeshadow from the UD Naked 2 palette to the top lash line and smoked it out into the lid shade.
  • Applied Swiss Chocolate, Soft Brown, and Darkside to the bottom lash line and smoked it out.
  • Applied MAC Nylong eyeshadow to the inner corner and brow bone.
  • Applied my Jordana Best Lash mascara to my top and bottom lashes. You could use fake lashes if you wanted to, but I just liked how my lashes looked naturally with this eye makeup since I also went with a dark lip color.

Face

For the face I did not want to bronze my skin up too much (also a makeup habit) because I wanted the focus to be on the eyes and lips. I prefer to do my face after I have done my eye makeup so I do not have to worry about any fallout from the shadows.

  • Too Faced Born This Way foundation in shade Warm Beige mixed with Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless foundation in shade Natural Buff.
  • Used the L.A. Girl concealer in Creamy Beige for the under eye area and other places I usually highlight with concealer.
  • Set my face and concealer with L’Oreal True Match setting powder in shade Sand Beige.
  • Contoured with the Wet N Wild Contouring Palette in Dulce De Leche and with the Wet N Wild bronzer in Bikini Contest.
  • Applied Wet N Wild Color Icon blush in Mellow Wine .
  • Used the rose gold shade from the Wet N Wild MegaGlo Illuminating palette as my highlight.

Lips

I only used one lip product and that was the Katy Kat Matte lipstick shade in Perry Panther from the Katy Perry and Covergirl line. This lipstick is very creamy and opaque, but not quite as matte as I was wanting. So, I picked up the Blackout shade from my UD Naked 2 palette and patted that on overtop with my finger. Doing this will also set the lipstick and help it to last longer.

5 Different Ways To Use Vaseline In Your Beauty Routine

Vaseline 100% petroleum jelly is a very common inexpensive household product that can be used in a variety of different ways. In this post, I am going to list 5 unique ways to incorporate this miracle product in your daily beauty routine that you may, or may not, have heard of before! vaseline

  1. Lip mask- Vaseline is extremely moisturizing and thick enough to be used as a lip mask. Apply a generous amount to your lips before you go to sleep and leave it on overnight. You will wake up with lips that are extremely soft, smooth, and moisturized! You could also mix a little bit of granulated sugar in with some Vaseline and use this as a simple and effective lip scrub.
  2. Clear brow gel- Sometimes when I just want to tame my brow hairs before running out the door, I will just scoop up a little bit of Vaseline with my fingers and swipe it through my brows to keep them in place. Vaseline is also said to help grow out your brow hairs, so this is like a two-in-one.
  3. Clear mascara- Again, when I am in a hurry and do not feel like putting on mascara, I will run some Vaseline through my lashes with my finger. The Vaseline gives your lashes a wet look, so it will make them look darker and thicker. Vaseline is also really hydrating for your lashes and over time, will make them appear thicker and longer naturally.
  4. Under eye moisturizer- Before you go to sleep, after you have gone through your normal night time skincare routine, you can apply just a little bit of Vaseline to the under eye area for extra hydration. Over time, the moisturizing properties of petroleum jelly will really help with fine lines and aging. This will also not cause breakouts.
  5. Base for powder highlighter- I love this trick! Before you go in with your favorite powder highlight, dab a very small amount of Vaseline on your cheekbones and then go overtop with the highlighter. This acts as a clear balm and will really intensify the highlight.

Hopefully y’all learned something new! Vaseline is something that everyone already has and the number of ways it can be used it never ending!

Product Review: The Best Foundation EVER!

I am a big fan of drugstore foundations because I have found a few great ones that I reach for over my more high end options. However, I have found nothing that matches up to the Too Faced “Born This Way” liquid foundation ($39).

too faced

This foundation is by far the best foundation I have ever used! I even like it better than the Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk liquid foundation that I raved about, and even though this Too Faced one is still a higher end foundation, it is way less expensive than the Armani one.

This foundation can work for ANY skin type- dry, combo, oily, etc. If you are a makeup artist, this is a great foundation to have because it is so universal and looks great on everyone!

Product Description (from Too Faced website):

  • Comes in 18 shades (they recently added six new shades!)
  • Oil-free formula
  • Medium to full coverage
  • Demi- matte finish
  • Infused with coconut water to give the skin a hydrated look without appearing greasy
  • Infused with Alpine Rose to give the skin a naturally brighter look and promote elasticity
  • Contains Hyaluronic Acid to give the skin a more balanced and youthful appearance

This foundation is medium to full coverage, but it does not feel heavy whatsoever (so it is still a great everyday foundation) and even when I look up close in the mirror, it does not even look like I am wearing foundation! It just looks like a better version of my own skin! When I am wearing this foundation, my skin and makeup has never looked more flawless. Even though this foundation is not specifically geared towards oily skin types, I still do not get extremely greasy or oily throughout the day. The longest I have ever worn this foundation is about 6 hours, but I think I could still get a good 8 hour wear out of this (I don’t like to wear makeup for longer than 8 hours anyway).

Hopefully this post was helpful for anyone wanting to try this foundation specifically or if anyone is on the hunt for their perfect foundation. This is the best foundation I have ever tried so far, drugstore or high end.

June Beauty Favorites!

I have a bunch of beauty products that I have been loving this month! Some of these I have had for a while that I have re-discovered and have been using the heck out of!

Wet N Wild Color Icon Bronzer in “Bikini Contest”

june 13

This bronzer is GORGEOUS! It is the perfect bronze shade. The texture is very smooth and the pigmentation is great. This is not a matte bronzer, but it is also not glittery at all. It just gives the perfect bronzed and glowy look, perfect for summer. I would not recommend using this as a contour shade or if you are very fair because it is very warm- toned.

Covergirl Tru Blend Bronzer in “Bronze”

june 6

This is another drugstore bronzer that I have been obsessed with. This one is more subtle than the Wet N Wild one and is not as warm. This bronzer will work better with a wider variety of skin tones. Again, this is not a matte bronzer, but is not super glittery and gives a gorgeous summer glow.

Lancome Blush Subtil in “Blushing Tresor”

june 7

This is a beautiful blush that I have been using almost everyday. It is a peachy toned blush with golden reflects in it, so it gives a natural flushed and highlighted look.

MAC Eyeshadow in “Nylon”

june 10

This is one of MAC’s most popular eyeshadows and in my opinion, it is the perfect brow bone and inner corner highlight. It is a frosty highlight shade with a slight yellow undertone and it absolutely gorgeous. After using it for the first time, I understood why everyone always talks about this shade!

Wet N Wild MegaGlo Illuminating Palette june 1

This highlighting palette is so pretty! The colors are gorgeous and can be used individually or you can mix them all together. I love how the strips are big enough to dip your brush into each one if you just want a specific shade. There is a lot of kick off when you go to pick up the product with a brush, but the pigmentation is great and it looks beautiful on the cheekbones.

John Frieda Frizz Ease Air-Dry Waves foam

june 8

I am not a big fan of putting styling products in my hair, but I love this stuff! It does not leave my hair feeling “crunchy” and gives a beachy wave look. My hair is already naturally wavy/ curly so this just enhances in a way that looks natural and effortless. All I do is I apply 2-3 pumps into the palm of my hands and massage/ squeeze it into my hair from root to tip. It gives great volume and reduces some of the frizz.

Murad Oil- Control Mattifier

june 9

This product has been a life saver for me all month! You apply it as a moisturizer (I only like to use it on the days I am going to be doing my makeup) and it does a great job of keeping oily skin at bay. I also do not have any issues applying makeup over top of this, but you can still use your everyday makeup primer overtop of this between the Murad and your makeup. It is a pretty thick consistency (feels like my normal facial sunscreen) but it does not feel heavy and sinks into the skin quickly.

Johnson’s Baby Shampoo

june 2

This might seem like an odd product, but this has been my favorite way to clean my brushes. It leaves them feeling extremely soft, rinses out really easily, and of course gets every bit of makeup out of the brush hairs.

Elf Stipple Brush

june 5

This has been my favorite brush to apply bronzer and even blush. The brush hairs are really soft and not too dense so they apply product very softly and evenly. Love it!

Real Techniques Small Setting Brush & Retractible Bronzing Brush

The small setting brush is the only brush I have been using to set my under eye area and other places I have applied concealer. I have also been using this brush to clean up my contour underneath the cheekbone because it is just the perfect size!

The retractible bronzing brush has been my go-to brush not for bronzer, but for foundation. It is a stipple brush, but the brush hairs are more densely packed than the Elf stipple brush, so I find that it applied foundation beautifully without leaving patches and soaking up too much product.

Lip Combo: Wet N Wild MegaLast lipstick in “Just Peachy” and NYX Butter Gloss in “Fortune Cookie”

I have been using this lip combo basically every time I have done my makeup the past few weeks. Y’all already know how much I love the NYX Butter Glosses, but this shade just looks so good just applied in the center of the lips overtop of the Wet N Wild lipstick. This combo looks so pretty with bronzed makeup!
